Nantwich Show Industry Award: August 2009
BRITISH CHEESE BOARD REWARDS LIFE LONG TRADE CONTRIBUTION
The British Cheese Board has presented Alan Salt with its prestigious BCB Nantwich Show Cheese Industry Award at this year's Nantwich International Cheese Show (28th & 29th July).
Now in its third year, the annual award recognises outstanding long term commercial or voluntary contributions to the UK cheese industry in the areas of cheese grading, cheese manufacture and cheese selection.
The presentation of the BCB Nantwich Show Cheese Industry Award to Alan Salt was wholeheartedly received by the audience. Alan was clearly moved with the acknowledgement, commenting "I'm absolutely delighted and so surprised to receive such a prominent award - particularly considering the vast number of worthy candidates in the industry."
Alan is well known within the trade having spent 36 years working at Dairy Crest Foods, formally owned by the MMB (Milk Marketing Board of England and Wales), during which time he undertook various roles from grading, packing, selling and delivering cheese to cheese making and attending and judging at agricultural and trade shows in the UK and abroad.
For the past 10 years Alan has also worked with the deli staff at most of the major retailers in the country, including ASDA, M&S, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose. Having left Dairy Crest in December 2008, Alan now works as an independent consultant to the industry.
"Alan's lifelong contribution to the cheese industry, especially through his work at Dairy Crest, makes him such a worthy recipient of this award," says Nigel White, Secretary of the British Cheese Board. "Alan is always keen to offer assistance and guidance, and does so with an enthusiasm that is hard to match. He is widely recognised throughout the trade and many have gained from his influence and insight."
